About book The Sentimentalists. Johanna Skibsrud (2011)

There's not much narrative to scrape out here. The book does have a direction and a purpose, put it does not push clearly and cleanly toward it. I rate it highly because as the author recounts odd and maudlin episodes of her life, and the mystery of her father's, I found my own thoughts and memories and regrets seemed to crystallize around the seed of her memories. While I read the words of her book, I spent in truth more time in my own world with my own memories. YMMV. Might not work for you; you might not want it to. This book did not wow me at all. Johanna Skibsrud's writing was annoying at times. She could of made her descriptions and narrative allot easier but she tended to go off and lose me with long drawn out sentences that could of been shorter. I read the whole book non the less, but I will not be re-reading it. The narrative is the problem and I've never read a book where a sentence is broken up by so many comas. This is Skibsrud's first novel, so I assume her writing style will improve.

Though a Giller winner, this story of Henny, a Vietnam war vet didn't hold my attention.
