My 10-year-old daughter loves this book and wanted me to read it. While it was very well-written and I did like the themes it emphasized, such as having confidence, using your wits, and being thankful for what you have, it was just a little too out there for me to really enjoy. The whole zoom mining, abused orphans, the fate of the mother and the airplanes put me over the edge of really getting into it. But Christina was a great character and for that I'm glad my daughter likes the book. I thought the plot was intriguing. I liked the main characters. But I would hesitate to recommend this book to a sensitive young reader. The "bad guy" in the book uses orphans to mine a newly discovered substance called Zoom. When any orphans no longer serves his needs, he puts them in a garbage truck and squishes them! Of course, the main characters figure this all out and facilitate the bad guy's capture. But the garbage truck image still stays with me.
Do You like book The Secret Of Zoom (2009)?
I liked it...fun to read. A little draggy in the middle, though.
