Archeologists in love and a mystery. Fine cast of characters from uptight professors and department chairs, military, long-lost brothers, suicide, hippies, government shenanigans with lethal gasses. This book had it all. There's an unexplained suicide, a grieving lover, mental breakdowns, unexpected love interest, military bad/good guys, archeological mysteries, bad behavior, crowd-sourcing that saves the world and a story that twisted me and danced on almost all my favorite tropes. I do like the love stories Harper Fox writes, so much real love and caring.Something tells me some other readers might think it's over the top or that the MC finds a new love too soon, still it joins what's been a wonderful series of books that have given me a lot of pleasure. I seem to be on quite a roll right now. It's not a 5-star, but a 4.5-star. I think that's because I wanted even more! I really, really liked thiis! Harper Fox is still a relatively new-to-me author and is quickly becoming an auto buy. This story is not a hearts and flowers romance, it deals with finding yourself, both for Dan and Rayne, a bit of a mystery, why did Jason kill himself, shadows and sins of the fathers (father figures in this case) haunting the present, families reconnecting - such a lot of plots.I loved the descriptive elements - could feel myself on the plain. This seems to be a key element of thhe authors works I've read so far. The start was a bit, not slow but I did think I was going to have to slog through the book, but no, after a few chapters it got going for me. Dan is a character that you can sympathise with, go 'what the f**k' at, dislike, cheer for and want him to win! Yes, there are bits where you kind of have to go with the flow rather than reality, but they didnt spoil the overall effect for me. One I started in the late evening and had to faorce myself to put down. I'll probably reread it again in a few days to pick up the bits I've missed in wanting to finish it.
