About book The Saga Of Rex (2010)

A little fox-like creature goes on a series of adventures through a fantastic world, meeting new friends and evading several enemies. This is just a compilation of all the Rex stories that have appeared in the Flight graphic novels. I thought there might be some extra material in this stand-alone book, but nope. I'd seen it all before in various Flight volumes. Rex's adventures are odd in that, he's a really cute little fox but he has some majorly disturbing gory encounters with other creatures. Not sure who the target audience is for this book. The animation style looks targeted at little kids, but the violence level doesn't seem appropriate for lower than middle school. I will give the story this, it is extremely hard to predict! Also I will mention that the artwork is impressive. There's no question Gagné is talented, especially given that he tells the story with very few words at all.Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. Several incidences with violence involving blood, gore, and death. Mostly wordless, the Saga of Rex brings you on the journey of a cute fox as he gets dragged to other worlds, meets alien species, and even finds love. The beautifully chosen colour themes add a magical quality to a magical tale. Along the way several transformations occur, worlds change, creatures change, Rex becomes more courageous and stronger. This connects to the overarching theme itself, that life is ever changing. For most of the story Rex is dragged around by events, but in the final third of the book, Rex learns that he is destined to save the planet he is on, and with the help of his new alien friends, he is given the power to do this. The illustrations at this point flare out in bright reds, yellows, and oranges as he destroys an oncoming world that would've collided into this planet. Having proven himself a worthy species, the morphogenic creature takes him to the final stage where they are sent on their way to seed life on an ideal world for them. The Saga of Rex is very quick to get through, and it is only due to an accurate use of the panelling, that the story is made possible.
