I probably read this book when it first came out, and I found myself with the copy that I had owned as a child. Hard backed, illustrated by Judith Kerr. I found myself sucked in to Mary's story. Her fury, her misery, her complete sense of being rejected by her parents - landed on her aunt and her Grandfather to live for an indefinite time. Mary begins to make up stories about herself, and almost believes them - and they are only challenged when she meets a local boy, and a refugee. It's an incredibly modern book. Dealing with divorce, rejection, refugees, loss of childhood, belonging. A kind of Secret Garden, but with teeth.
