About book The Rise Of Enlightened Sexism: How Pop Culture Took Us From Girl Power To Girls Gone Wild (2010)
Douglas is both knowledgable and hilarious and this book is no different. This book was less about the AHA! moments, for me, and more about several instances of her explaining in clear concise writing things that I have had rolling around in my head for years concerning our desire for pubic ownership of our own bodies and our desire for respect. Can you have that respect and still be unapologetic about your femininity or androgyny? There is no definite answer but Douglas deals with the sale of women's bodies and lives by the media with pitch perfect commentary. We have been participating in a voyeuristic game with the media and no one wins in the long run except the already wealthy media moguls making money off of the condemnation of any women that is too feminine or not enough so. The next question is why. Why do we buy the magazines, why participate in the blogging, why do we perpetuate the double standard with our daughters? This is a wonderful book for young adults, or adults without much knowledge on the theories and studies of feminism and the mass-media. I feel like the author meant the book to be a "Backlash" for the 21st century, but it did not live up to it's predecessor. I go back and forth on whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars, but the bottom line is that the book is extremely detailed and insightful on today's media. The problem I found with it, was that it's extremely long, and it doesn't say anything new to those of us who have studied the history and theories of feminism.

Very disappointed. If you want a good book by this author, try "Where the Girls Are" instead.
