About book The Revenant (2011)

Willie is the sort of girl I would not befriend in real life. She's selfish, but oblivious to the fact. I wanted to reach though the page on several occasions and give her a good shaking. Willie runs away to a school under an assumed identity, but seems blase about keeping that identity in tact. I found myself vindictively more interested in seeing it blow up in her face than the actual ghost plot. The story is good, but Willie annoys. I liked this book, surprisingly. I'm not usually one for American Victorianism and don't usually pick up books set in America during that period, let alone in the American West. But after reading A Race to Splendor recently, I realized my prejudice for turn of the century American stories was perhaps a little unfair. This book piqued my interest because of the the Indian Territory setting, which is also unusual for me, but, recently I've become a bit more interested in my heritage. I'm glad I finished it. It's a sweet story, and simple. I wasn't a huge fan of the Spiritualism component but I liked the Cherokee and Tahlequah history. I wasn't aware that NSU started as a Cherokee Seminary for girls and that the original buildings are still there. I'm interested now to discover more about the area and might even pick up some Native fiction.
