About book The Red Umbrella (2010)

I really enjoyed this book. Historical fiction has always been a favorite genre of mine. However, history was never my favorite subject in school. There's something about a historical event being told through a fictional story that helps me like it. My history classes growing up seemed to have skipped the Cuban Revolution, so I really knew nothing about it. This book introduced me to a few of the events that took place in Cuba and, in result, America during the 1960s that I would've never known about otherwise. A quick, fun, enlightening book that makes a sad, dark story lighthearted and entertaining. During Operation Pedro Pan, 14,000 children were sent by their parents from Cuba to the United States, in the early 1960's. It was the largest exodus of children in the Western Hemisphere. This is a fictional story, based on fact, of a Cuban family that faced this very difficult dilemma - send the children away, or leave them to be indoctrinated into a Communistic society.I loved the book. The author captured the emotions of both the Cuban side and the Americans that received them. Excellent read.
