About book The Real Mason (2012)

Reviewed by Michelle V.Book provided by the publisher for reviewReview originally posted at Romancing the BookThe Real Mason by Julia Devlin is an erotic BDSM romance that combines both sweet romance and hot erotica to create a gripping story.Anna has been dating Mason for six months now and although they haven’t said the words yet, she knows she has finally found love. Then, out of the blue he tells her their relationship isn’t working and he is ending it. Confused and devastated, Anna demands to know why. The answer is nothing she ever expected. Mason reveals a secret and gives her a choice to either accept the lifestyle he wants to live, or walk away and let him go.I very highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars. The writing is superb with characters that completely stole my heart. I was hooked from the very first page and could not put it down until the very end. The story is fast paced and high on the heat level. There’s much more than just the steamy hot sex, though. The characters are well developed and we get to see their emotional journey through this relationship and as they make life-changing decisions.I really liked Anna and could relate to her in a lot of ways. She’s very sweet, naïve, and conservative. She works as a first grade teacher and has lived a fairly sheltered life. Mason is a sexy, masculine, and commanding hero. He’s multi-layered and I love that the author lets us see his emotional journey as well as Anna’s. There are a lot of emotional ups and downs that kept me feeling invested in the story. When it was over I was sad to reach the end and found myself wishing for more.

This book is more a 4.5 for me. It was *almost* a 5 but didn't like the ending...Story starts of with Mason breaking up with Anna because he is tried of hiding his Dom side from her. Anna is naturally shocked since they had a great night the day before and there was nothing leading up to him being discontent with their relationship. After he explains to her (after much prodding) why they cant be together, she decides to try it out.Good:1)Mason was really understanding and patient. I liked how he let her come to him, didn't force her into the Lifestyle. 2)sex was amazing! I would have like a tad more variety but over all very good. There was a healthy dose of S&M 3) Very realistic how she didn't immediately follow his commands like she's been a sub all along.Bad:1) didn't like the ending. Felt like she changed which wasn't needed imo 2) I would have like Mason to have been more firm with her than he was. She was darn near insolent. 3) Would have like to read a flashbacks on how their relationship was prior to him 'coming out' (lol)From their conversation it seemed like Mason did a 360 on Anna. 4) I think this was more so on the length of the book than the writing but I would have like Anna pov in how he changed to have been expounded on 5) too much ily...it was annoyingOver all, very good if you like bdsm and want to read a book where the couple are already together (for the most part) rather than two couples getting together

Do You like book The Real Mason (2012)?

I had high hopes for this based on reviews on Ellora's Cave's site. It didn't live up to them for me, unfortunately. It was OK. It was kind of sweet, Mason knowing he's a Dom and not thinking Anna would be into that, so rather than continue the (perfect) relationship, he decides to just break up with her. At which point, she demands to know why. As I said, their relationship was perfect. Or so she thought. Mason gives her "homework" -- a list of sites and books to review over the next month. If she sees that and still wants to explore a relationship with him, they'd meet in a month. Turns out Anna's a little repressed and a bit of a pain slut. Maybe that's why I didn't get it? I like a bit of domination in my reading, but I'm not into the pain thing. Had I known, I probably would have just skipped this one. As it is, it's an interesting story about a woman whose love for her man sort of forces her to recognize certain aspects about her sexuality... aspects that Mason does a good job of bringing out in her. It just didn't feel all that sexy to me. Mason wasn't *mean* or anything, I just didn't really feel a real connection between them after he initially breaks up with her.I dunno... I didn't hate it, but it wasn't as great as I'd hoped.

Rated 3.75 starsThis was a nice fast read. I'm really kind of getting into this Dom/sub thing. I have learned that I have limits as to what level I will enjoy reading and this was one of them. Nothing beats an attentive man who wants to ravish you and Mason fits the bill perfectly. I found it difficult to fully picture Anna in my head but I got the idea of innocence meets Dominant and that was good enough for me. I would have enjoyed reading a bit about his internal struggle and frustration of being in a vanilla relationship. It would have built more excitement for me.
