An intense dose of personal anecdote and passionate rebuttal, Peter Hitchens' "The Rage Against God" is a bit wordy and difficult to swim through at times. However, Peter's rhetoric and mastery of both the English language and thorough knowledge of history is most impressive, and his address of the main points that his brother Christopher makes in "god is not Great" is excellent and noteworthy. This is definitely worth the read. Great, if not a bit heartbreaking read from the other, not so boozy, fun, witty, and bombastic Hitchens brother. The analysis is sharp from someone who actually was there regarding so many of the modern intelligista's, naive, twitterpation with collectivist totalitarian tendencies as progressive, inevitable social evolution, always "for the good". Just as sharp of a criticism leveled at the inability for so-called conservatives to call bad policy bad on the part of one of their own, e.g. G.W. Bush's hastiness around the Iraq conflict - as well as the foolishness of confusing national patriotism with one's allegiance to God. No silver bullets, this-what-they-should-have-done isms here, just observations and reflections from both the world's and the personal theater of life, with a melancholy note when it comes to Peter's relationship with his now late, brother, Christopher. The journey from atheism to faith is realistically conveyed with all of the ups and downs attendant to one so devoted to mental, political, and philosophical pursuits. The notes taken from living in Soviet-era Moscow are rich, if not depressing at some points, but again, they provide a vivid reminder of what utopian fantasies actually end up being when they come to life. By far, not a simplistic communism is bad/capitalism is good view espoused here, but rather, a realistic assessment of the limits of any and all human made, isms in view of the one, utopia-resistant aspect of humanity that all utopian schemes seem to perpetually forget...namely, humanity.
