If you like books that take place back in 1864, this is the book for you! The Quilt Walk is a historical fiction book. I really enjoyed this book because the author put great detailing in everything and overall, it was an amazing book. Emmy Blue is a young girl who lived in Quincy, Illinois. Her dad decided it would be better off if they move to Colorado. Emmy Blue loves adventures but she wasn't so excited about moving away from all her friends and family. In this book, the story takes place mostly in the west, since they are moving from Illinois to Colorado by wagon. Emmy Blue's mother also wasn't very excited to move to Colorado either. She wanted to stay with her friends and family, and quilt. Mother was always trying to make Emmy get into quilting but Emmy Blue didn't like quilting very much. When they were getting everything packed up and into the wagon, Emmy's grandmother gave her a gift. She couldn't open in it till they crossed the Missouri River. When they were traveling west, Emmy saw new things she has never seen before. She saw mountains up close and she crossed rivers. Once they reached the Missouri River, Emmy Blue opened her grandmother's gift to her. It was fabrics to make a quilt. Emmy Blue wasn't really excited to see it was fabrics because she knew her mother would make her quilt them while traveling. Emmy Blue learned how to quilt during traveling west. She took quilt walks to try and finish the quilt. Her mother would always give opinions on how her quilt is going and tell her if she needs to redo parts or not. Once Emmy was finished with the quilt she named it, "Indian Rescue." She named the quilt that because when Emmy and her friend were playing a game they didn't realize how far all the wagons has gotten and this Indian came and brought her to them again. Once they finally made it to Colorado, Emmy likes it there and she also works for her mother's business at a fabric store. She likes quilting now and she thinks she would give it a chance.I liked how the author put Emmy Blue's emotions into detail. The author made her seem like she was different and she is a very strong young girl. I don't get why the author ended the book with, " This quilt shouldn't have a star name at all, we are going to call it The Quilt That Walked to Golden." I wish the author gave more detailing in the end of this book. For example how the business was still going a little later they came to Colorado. An interesting thing that I have learned from this book was that you never know if you would enjoy something if you had never tried it. In other words, if you never try something you never know if you will like it or not. I think this was the theme because Emmy didn't like quilting but she never really tried it but when she did, she liked it. I give this book a three star rating out of five. I give this three stars because I liked the book but I just didn't like how it ended. I wish it gave more detailing. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read historical fiction or anyone who likes books that make you think before you do something. Always try something new because if you never do, you never know if you would like it or not. I enjoy historical fiction. I do. And I enjoy a good pioneer story. The Quilt Walk is a middle grade pioneer story. It was satisfying for what it was. Emmy Blue and her mom and dad are traveling with a wagon train to Golden, Colorado. Her aunt and uncle are also going. Her dad and uncle are the ones who really, really, really want to go. Her aunt and mom, well, they'd have been happy spending the rest of their lives right where they were. Her mom is more outwardly accepting of this change. Her aunt complains plenty. There are things she's sad about, things she's hopeful about. The focus is on the journey for the most part. Readers meet several other characters traveling in the wagon train. Emmy and her mom make new friends. Emmy makes one friend close to her own age. Emmy makes several friends who are older than her. One woman is newly married. One woman has three children under the age of four. Every person has a story of their own. What will Emmy's story be? Based on the title alone, one can suppose that her story has to do with a quilt. At the start of the journey, Emmy hates quilting. She does. Not that she's ever properly given it a go. She knows that her mom loves, loves, loves to quilt. Loves getting together with other ladies to quilt. But Emmy sees it as tedious and boring. But. Her grandmother gives her blocks to quilt together to make a quilt top for her doll. Blocks to piece together on the journey, on the trip. And her mom expects her to do just that. To piece this quilt together some each day. And Emmy does. And by the end, she might have begun to change her mind about quilting. At least a little bit.
