Au coeur de ce roman, un couple d'Américains, qui fera fortune dans la finance et construira une famille. Et avec l'argent viennent tous ces privilèges, qu'ils peuvent s'offrir sans vraiment réfléchir...Le paradoxe dans tout cela, c'est que loin de rapprocher, l'argent éloigne, et restreint la famille à son seul cocon. Quel sens donner à ce bûcher des vanités ? Jonathan Dee a parfaitement compris notre époque : "Combien faut-il pour que ce soit trop ? La bonne réponse, c’est que ce n’est jamais trop, puisque la question n’est pas dans le besoin, la question est de se sentir en sécurité dans le monde, et peut-on jamais se sentir en sécurité ?" Récemment traduit en français, Jonathan Dee prouve par ce roman qu'il est un auteur à suivre. Il y a du Franzen chez lui, et aussi du DeLillo ; bref, il s'inscrit parmi les meilleurs auteurs contemporains américains. Son grand mérite est de ne pas juger ni de donner une leçon de morale ou de "punir" ses personnages, offrant ainsi une réflexion sur le pouvoir de l'argent, le tout avec un réalisme troublant.Si vous vous posiez encore la question de savoir où se situe la littérature aujourd'hui, elle n'est plus en France, elle n'est sans doute pas non plus en Amérique latine, mais bien aux Etats-Unis. Seuls les auteurs américains parviennent aujourd'hui à traduire les réalités de notre époque avec une maîtrise incomparable et un sens de la subtilité sans commune mesure. I really enjoyed Dee's _A Thousand Pardons_, and someone told me this was much better, so of course I was excited to read it, if a little suspicious.I did really like this, though it's a very different kind of book-- where ATP was kind of a fever dream, a strangely whimsical kind of book, this one is kind of social realism-- I mean, there are limits to that description, probably mostly contained in the way that Adam makes his money and then more money-- but it definitely takes place in a recognizable world in a way that ATP is in more of a private world of the author's imagination.This is, then, a kind of treatment of the world of Privilege, of it's characters, and it comes close to satire at point, the isolation and inability of these characters to outrun their material circumstances, but in the end its pretty gentle in its satire. In fact, the book has a lot to say, but about wealth, probably not too much.The writing is, I have to say, lush and lovely throughout, though the opening chapter, the wedding sequence, is show stopping. And the emotional beats of Cynthia's story were incredibly moving, and Jonah's story, which ended the book, was, well, totally weird, but probably a better ending than any of the other, more grounded threads the book could have ended on.A really lovely read.
