The Pirate of Kindergarten is an adorable picture book for primary grades. The illustrations are beautiful! At the beginning of the book, you really feel like you have double vision because the illustrator did such a wonderful job. I think this will really help younger students understand and get a feel for what double vision is. I love the way that the author spun what seemed like a tragedy to Ginny, into a positive thing. Instead of being the girl with an eye-patch, Ginny became a Kindergarten pirate.At our school, our school nurse does hearing and vision screenings within the first month of school. This would be the perfect book to use for the day that your students are getting screened! Many students get nervous on this day. I think that the message of this story would make them feel more comfortable and reassure them that it is okay to wear glasses, or even an eye patch! This book could also be used to tell students that all children are different and so everyone might need something different in order for them to learn and to be successful. Ginny needed an eye patch and glasses. The teacher could point out something, he or she needs in order to read or accomplish a task. This would be a good beginning of the year writing opportunity. If you teach younger students and they are unable to construct a letter at the beginning of the year, you could send home a paper to parents explaining that you read The Pirate of Kindergarten today and you would like them to write you a letter explaining what their child needs in order to be successful. This will build instant rapport with the parents because you are reaching out and asking for advice on their child. If students are capable of constructing a letter, you could have them write a letter to you, their teacher, telling you what they need in order to learn and have a successful school year. A fabulous book and winner of the Schneider Family Book Award for Children's book in 2011.* The story is engaging and vision issues are clearly explained through language and artwork.
