About book The Peasant Queen (2010)

Krystal is a simple farmer’s daughter with a simple problem. Her brother had promised her in marriage to the town oaf. Krystal wants more than anything to escape this marriage, but that’s before she’s kidnapped and whisked away to another kingdom by a tyrant king, Grogory, who also wants her hand in marriage. He also wants to kill his nephew, Jareth, the kingdom’s rightful ruler.Krystal also live in a world with magic and mystical beast. These elements are understated and don’t dominate the storyline. This is a young adult novel that focuses primarily on the bravery and honor of young woman at its heart, and Krystal is a very brave and honorable young woman. There is hardly a page of this book where Krystal does not find herself in some peril and not a danger that she doesn’t meet head on with controlled fear.As this description might imply this is a fast paced story, certain to keep the attention of the young adult market and even enjoyable to those of us older adults who like a somewhat innocent coming of age story. I say “somewhat innocent” only because there is one mentioning of prostitution, an attempted rape, and a few violent deaths. Nothing I would personally feel uncomfortable with my daughter reading, but perhaps not great for the youngest or most sensitive of young adults. This is a fun story and a quick read. Krystal is a peasant girl who is kidnapped to become the wife of King Gregory. I liked the characters, but sometimes things seemed to happen too easily or without sufficient motivation. One thing that was never satisfactorily answered in the book is why Krystal was chosen. They saw her through a magic sphere, but how did it find her? What was the question asked to make the sphere find her? Overall though, it was a fun read and I'd be interested in reading Cheri Chesley's next book.
