About book The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Inside Story Of America's War In Afghanistan (2011)
Readers may recall President Obama's decision to relieve Army General Stanley McChrystal from his command of U.S. forces in Afghanistan several years back. You may also recall that his decision was largely based on an article in Rolling Stone by Michael Hastings titled "The Runaway General." "The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan" is Hastings's expanded book version of that piece. The book is strengthened by added detail, but weakened somewhat by the author's focus on himself as much as on the cowboy, off-the-reservation behavior that sometimes characterizes military commanders. However, Michael Hastings's personal story does deserve attention, considering his subsequent pariah status in some circles because of his work. Tragically, Hastings died in 2013 under what many consider to be mysterious circumstances. Bottom in this, as in so many things: Human beings in high places make decisions that affect our lives, and, as human beings, they bring all their flaws to the process. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this...I'm a junkie for all things Afghanistan and Iraq. Downloaded this months ago and the recent, tragic death of the author compelled me to move this up to the top of my list. Well written, easy to read, excellent pacing...like having a conversation with the author.One comment on the obvious takeaway that the military is gangbusters for all things warfare....well, that's sort of the job, right? When the civilian leadership gives the orders, the military leadership should be expected to attack the problem with vigor, and not to publically admit defeat. Behind closed doors...sure, but in public....never. I think at times the media in this country is entirely too critical for the public "glass is half-full" outlook of our military leadership. Public optimism for the mission goes with the job description.All that being said, the General earned his firing. His comments about the President were inexcusable and unforgivable.
