About book The Ninth District - A Thriller (2011)

This cat-and-mouse crime thriller introduces us to grizzled veteran FBI agent Jack Miller, facing age 40 and troubling marital issues, and his new partner protégé, agent Ross Fruen, as they track down a serial bank robber who has just added murder to his MO. What they don't realize is the criminal mastermind behind these robberies is using these robberies to set up a major robbery of the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis. Jack is a relatable hero working through his flaws and the story flows well. Thanks to Goodreads and the author for my copy of this book. This book was a little disappointing to me. It started off in a very promising way, but did not quite make good on that promise. There were too many things left unexplained, too many plot threads left hanging. I don't want to get too spoilery and specific here.I thought the "Junior" thing got a little repetitive, as did the near-constant mention of the sweat running down his face. Just how hot was it, anyway? It was never specified. The ending was very abrupt and a bit of a let-down, almost as if the author got tired of writing it and wanted to finish it quickly. I thought the Epilogue (that had been added later) might have something in it, but it was mainly just a setup for the sequel. The timeline in the Epilogue didn't quite add up for me, either. It was stated twice that the events of the book had occurred one week previously (around the July 4 holiday), but the injured Ross was to report to Quantico after Labor Day, with "about a month to get my shoulder ready". Isn't July 4 to Labor Day TWO months? The proofreading left a little to be desired; there were several mistakes ("Jack sat in his cubical", "he clamored along the edge", "illuminating the dust moats", "A biker peddled by", "a guilty conscious" -- to mention a few). These kinds of errors really irritate me.All that being said, this was not a bad first book. There was a lot of suspense, a good plot twist, the FBI guys were likable, and it moved along at a good pace. I really was interested to see what was going to happen next. And I appreciated the fact that the author didn't have anything bad happen to Vince just for the hell of it.
