About book The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance (2009)
What a fun read! The author, (who I quickly fell in love with), is a young Mormon woman, relates the trials and tribulations of being single (many of which I could relate to) but her trials are complicated by the fact that she is a Mormon. Torn between following the teachings of her faith and following her heart, the reader roots for her to be happy and make the right choices. At many moments this memoir is laugh-out-loud funny--the stories about her adventures in looking for love are self-deprecating and heart warming. I think many women will find common ground with Elna, even if they aren't Mormon. I really wanted to like this book. And it was entertaining for the most part, but more often than not, I was left with an uncomfortable feeling in my gut during times when her faith or morals were tested. We've all ben there, maybe not as Mormons, but in our own way of situations where we find ourselves thinking..."why am I going along with this?" or "how did I get HERE, to this moment?" And while as readers, we get to experience some of her personal growth, I still felt left unfulfilled at the end. Perhaps, I'm just beyond the phase in my life where reading about a young 20-something in New York looking for love isn't interesting. Or perhaps memoirs aren't best written by a 20-something? I don't know. I definitely enjoyed the author's voice and style, but I struggled with the content. I think I would be more interested to see the pages of "What I believe/What I used to believe" after another 5-10 years for her.
