Emily is a medium in London in the 1800's. Her sister unknowingly unleashes a shape-shifting demon. Emily has to team up with Jacob (a ghost with a mystery behind his death) to send the demon back where it came from. She meets plenty of danger and unbelievers along the way, but she is strong and determined. The romance between the two lead character is slow, but understandably so. He's a ghost, and she's flesh and bone. It didn't end quite the way I was hoping, but that's because there is more to this story. I'm sure I'll enjoy the other books just as much as this one. I liked this book a lot more than I expected. I enjoy books set in the spiritualist / Victorian period and this suited both. The story grabbed, and held, my interest. It didn't get bogged down in descriptive detail as sometimes happens. I am in no way a romance novel fan, so I was very pleased that the romance aspect of the book fell short of tipping over into the sugary quagmire of goo in the way some novels do. I will read the other books in the series.
