About book The Meat Market (2013)

I was expecting something different from this book when I bought it and while it was different than expected, it was every bit as awesome as I had hoped it would be! And dark, which is a must in my reading repertoire. I REALLY appreciated having a story from the POV of an atheist. I'm sure there are plenty of books that have this, but with my luck, most of the books I pick up seem to have Christian characters even when it's not a christian book, and having those beliefs thrown at me CONSTANTLY (books, television, media, people knocking on my door...) well, lets just say that was another thing that made this book a stand out escape from life for me. The down to earth characterizations and strong voice really MAKE this novel. James Chalk has really managed to build a believable world that covers all aspects of what makes a society a society. But this society is different :) and given how I usually don't like sci-fi (for some reason I didn't realize this was sci-fi when I bought it) it is actually impressive HOW MUCH I enjoyed this. Every now and then a sci-fi author manages to make me re-think my aversion to the genre. James Chalk did just that. More of this, please. This novel by Chalk based on a futuristic colonization of the solar system, is a bit deceptive at first glance. The first chapter begins with a passage from the bible, which made me think this was a religious book, but the reason why the author chose to begin the book that way was made clear when it was revealed that mankind is ruled by religious fanatics—‘religiopricks’. The story is written in the first person with graphic, colorful language that had me LOL, with places such as, Sanctity Space Port and Bikini Bar. Chalk did a good job is the way he presents his alternate world in answer to mankind’s over abuse and misuse, as well as our over population of our planet earth. Chalk believes something has to give and this Great Solar Diaspora is his solution. Brilliantly done!
