A lot is being said about Brian K. Vaughn's 'Saga' right now, and rightly so. It's awesome. However, there's way more than enough room for a few awesome comics to come out at the same time, and if I were to recommend something that's just as good, it'd be Jonathan Hickman's Manhattan Projects. This series gives us all the greats of science, but twisted. Imagine a world in which Einstein, Oppenheimer, Feynman, and more get together to build the atomic bomb. Which shouldn't be too hard to imagine because that's what happened. However, in this version, it took the scientists about 3 days to make the atomic bomb, after which they were free to pursue whatever projects they wanted. Oh, and most of them are evil. Or insane. Or both. And when I say insane, I mean the kind of insane where one scientist believes that by consuming the flesh of others he can gain their insights and knowledge. Yep.Harry S. Truman is an artificial intelligence, Einstein is drunkenly trying to open an interdimensional portal, and Laika the Russian space dog is kind of a genius. If you like your comics crazy, as in insane crazy AND crazy good, Manhattan Projects is for you. -Peter This series is nonstop insanity and one of my absolute favorite new comics. Borrowing from history and wrecking havoc with it, Hickman takes a simple idea of "What if the Manhattan Project had continued to develop after the war" and lets it spin out of control. Titans of science and history appear in this hyper surrealistic series and I honestly have no way of explaining just how madcap, exciting, freakish and wonderful this entire run has been for me. I picked it up on the recommendation of my local comic shop and instantly turned around and bought 2nd trade as well as signed up for the monthlies.
