Fantastic storyline in with much more going on than The Long War. the interactions of Sally and Maggie are really awesome. Their quests are becoming much more interesting and the consequences of everyone's actions are much more strongly felt. I still think there's not that much going on in terms of action, but the story and future consequence makes up for it. The depth of the theories and scientific input is huge. Also moral quandaries are well discussed. I can't do the book justice with my paltry words. You have to read it to understand. The scale of the Long Earth continues to expand, and unfortunately the characters continue to diminish. This one jumps through several years of plot developments, an exploration of Mars, and the evolution of a new species, but the characters don't do much more than observe and occasionally nudge events. Baxter has always been more about ideas and scenery than stories, but the appeal is wearing thin for me.
