About book The Little Bookstore Of Big Stone Gap: A Memoir Of Friendship, Community, And The Uncommon Pleasure Of A Good Book (2012)

I'm giving this book 2 stars because it took forever to read. It should have gone much faster than it did. Several chapters I moved through quickly and other felt like heavy lifting. This book shouldn't have been heavy. It should have been a cute book about a cute bookstore and the cast of characters contained working. This book did show the reader a small glimpse into the interworking of owning a book store and people new kids on the block in a small town. But I feel cheated in some way. I feel like some pieces were missing. As difficult as she tried to make starting this bookstore appear, it was way too easy. I feel like much of it was glossed over or they got really lucky and made it work. Either way, the book is cute. If I were in town, I would pay them a visit but the book didn't hit its mark. Coming from a small town and loving books, I picked this up off the display shelf. I loved the couple who took a chance to escape the stress of their jobs by following their dream, buying an old house in a rural community and converting it into a used bookstore. While they lacked forward planning they doubled down to make the bookstore a reality. Dreams do not come cheap as they sacrificed their own comfort and book collection to open the store. Their accounts of gaining the trust of their community and building a customer base range from touching to hilarious. By making the store a community gathering place with numerous non-book related events, they succeeded in making the friends they needed to weather the inevitable gossip and nastiness that is underneath most small town smiles. The end of the book wandered a little as they took a nearly 3,000 mile tour of small bookstores. That became a little tedious, but hang in there it all ends well.

Overall enjoyed the stories, but a little long winded and tangential towards the end.
