About book The Lincoln Hypothesis (2000)

I liked the book more than I thought I would. After all, the premise that Lincoln read the Book of Mormon is impossible to prove. The author brings the fact that the pages in the original book are dog-eared where passages are relevant. Well, that proves he read it, right? NO. It's a library after all. Lincoln quoted/said some of the same words that are in the Book of Mormon-- Oh-- I won't go on. I approached this book with a negative attitude and it carried through. But with that said, I did learn some things. I did like the facts and the many references to his sources. Most of his sources are reliable and believable. I wanted to believe his premise, but I wasn't convinced. What I think is this: Lincoln did want to do what was best for America. He was also a prayerful man who believed in God. I believe he was inspired to do and say what he did. Maybe he read the Book of Mormon, and maybe he didn't. I think that God has blessed America and that Lincoln was a great man who helped America in its cause for freedom. This book made me want to read more about Lincoln. It made me thirst for more information about our countries early history. Having just finished reading this book minutes ago, and with the author's "hypothesis" fresh in my mind, I can honestly say that I agree whole-heartedly with his findings. I am, quite frankly, astounded by the amazing facts and similarities that he gathered between the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith and Abraham Lincoln. Each of them were given a specific calling to restore America to the covenant with its Maker. For each of them, this was no easy task and each of them were required to lay down their lives for the greater good of the land of promise and it's covenant people. During one chapter in which the author relates the story behind the creation of Battle Hymn of the Republic, he promises the reader that he or she will never think of this hymn the same way again. Well, after reading this book, I will never think of Abraham Lincoln or the American Civil War again! A great read! I will definitely read this one again!
