About book The Lady With The Little Dog (2000)

Chekov brilliantly encapsulates the sheer boredom and monotony of his characters lives in this short story by emphasizing the grey world around them , made brighter for each by the others presence - doing this by the fact that almost no conversation takes place except during their dirext encounters. A penetrating psychological study with great and social observations - - if you are used to C's understated style - those new to him may find this a little dry The Lady with the Little Dog by Anton ChekhovAnton Chekhov may be the absolute master of short stories. For my part, I also like Maugham and it would be hard to say which one more than the other…better said the same. The story which fascinated me for the first time at the age of about 17- 20, was the one regarding the sneeze. I couldn’t believe my eyes as I was reading through it. To sneeze over someone and die for it! There is this public servant who sneezes at the theatre and in the seat in front happens to be seated a hierarchical superior. Apologies follow and finally death at the thought that he will not be forgiven, even if the superior gives no second thought to the minor incident, accepts the apologies and thinks nothing of an insignificant sneeze…Coming back to the Lady with the Pomeranian, like the dog in Molloy, who was constipated, because all Pomeranians are-it is good for them, this is just an “impression”. I write here not so much “reviews”, but my thoughts during and after the reading of the book and most importantly, as I write something about it. This is a Russian love story, which reminds me somewhat of “Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano and other Russian movies by Mihalkov (and not only him), where the atmosphere, the characters say: we are bored, depressed, sad, melancholic…in fact, the man and woman say a few times in The Lady with the Little Dog that they are bored, with their life, with the “lackey” husband….Lucky they fall in love
