Castle of Mystery is the second in the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. Siblings Jack and Annie find a tree house in the woods near where they live in Frog Valley. Having been amazed by the experience of their previous adventure where they go back to the time of the dinosaurs through magical books, when they get back home, Annie, the more adventurous and mischievous of the pair, wants to go back and find more about the books. The siblings open a page and point to a picture of a castle and make a wish. Suddenly the tree house spins and they find themselves back in medieval times near a castle. Jack wants to return immediately, but Annie insists on getting a closer look at the castle, a decision which gets the pair into trouble, as we will find out. While exploring, the pair are caught by guards and put in the castle’s dungeon. Fortunately they manage to escape, and get to enjoy a tour of the spooky castle in the process, and plenty of history. This is an excellent read for pupils aged 6-8. It inspires children to read and learn more about history. There are interesting facts about the medieval times such as ‘crocodiles in moat’, ‘hawks being trained to hunt other birds’ and ‘people eating peacocks’. The children’s immersive experience is a good way to bring history to life in book form. We can imagine what it might have been like to explore a medieval castle in a way that wouldn’t be the same from a text book, for example. The illustrations are simple but well drawn. The book has plenty of dialogue, which helps the narrative move fast and lends itself to being read out loud. It includes vivid descriptions of the dungeon, with lines such as ‘chains hanging from the filthy walls’. There is also some advanced vocabulary, such as ‘clammy’, ‘water-streaked’. But there is no obvious moral lesson to be had from the book. Annie’s over-curiosity allows us to experience the adventure, despite her being the source of the trouble the pair gets into. Jack is the ‘voice of reason’. Magic Tree House, Castle of Mystery is a useful reading book which will inspire children to be interested in history.
Do You like book The Knight At Dawn (1993)?
“The Knight at Dawn” by Mary Pope Osborne is the second book in the Magic Tree House book series. The book starts off that the previous day Jack and his sister Annie found a tree house in the frog creek woods which was full of books. When they selected a book and wished upon it, they were sent in time travel to that place. In the middle of the next night Annie comes into Jack’s room and neither of them can sleep, because they are thinking of the tree house. Annie eventually convinces Jack to come along to the tree house. When they get to it they go inside and try to figure out who’s tree house it is and why are all the books there. While Jack wanted to leave Annie found a book about knights on black horses. Just as Jack was about to leave Annie wishes them to the knight in armour. When they get there, they sneak into the guarded castle and watch what they do in that time period. Not to long after that they get caught by some guards and get thrown into the dungeon. To escape the dungeon, Annie uses her flashlight as a pretend “magic wand” and the guards become scared. They escaped the castle and just outside the moat was a knight on his horse waiting for them. They both got set onto the horse and he took them back to the tree house. They went back home and Jack realized that on the books all of the same letter “M” was on all of them. He figured out all of the books were for the same person. The characters in the book are two young kids Jack and Annie, whom are brother and sister. Jack is the older brother to Annie and did all of the thinking between them. Annie was the explorer type and did everything Jack didn't want to. They both end up saving each other in different situations and always making it back home safely. The setting of the story takes place starting out in the frog creek woods were the tree house is located in the tallest tree in the woods. The rest of the book takes place in the medieval time period with knights and dungeons. The author gives very good, detailed descriptions of the setting and how it is at the time period.I would recommend this book to elementary through middle school kids who are looking for a good book series to read. It is a very good short chapter book to read on your free time. I enjoyed this book and is one of my favorites in the book series.

Overall, this was a quick read. I loved the fact that this series is an ongoing mystery. Each book has a clue that leads to something significant. The stories keep getting better, but I love them equally. My favourite part was when the kids were trying to escape the castle after they got caught. that was intense. The whole time I was skimming the book and I still understood what happened. I agree with what I said in my review about the first book of the series. My elementary self would loved, but as of now, it was okay. Although, it did bring nostalgia to me as I was reading this book and possibly continuing the series.

The book that i read is called The Night At Dawn (Magic Tree House) and it was written by Mary Pope Osborn. The book is about two kids Jack and Anny that go to a magic tree house that takes them where ever they want to go. In this book they went back in time to Camelot where they sneak into a castle and they get captured by the nights and try and figure out how to escape and get back home. I would recommend this book for people that like adventure books. One thing that i really like about this book is that it is adventure and magical book which is my favorite type of book. I also really like the story line and how everything happens a certain way. Its suspenseful because u don't really know whats about to happen. My favorite part is when Jack and Anny go sneaking around the castle of the nights of the round table.
