Before I finished the first page of this book I had to close my eyes and take a moment to appreciate the writing style--that beautiful kind that uses words so well. I really enjoyed it from that perspective; there are a handful of things I made note of to put in my quote file. I also enjoyed the overall premise, the historical fiction and time-travel/teleportation aspects. But, it moved rather slowly for me and I found it ultimately unsatisfying. It was worth it though, for the atmosphere. I was surprised to find so many low ratings for this book! It's been one of my favorite reads so far this year! I saw in a number of reviews that many were annoyed at the length of the footnotes in the story but I actually found the backstory history pretty interesting. Perhaps it would have made for easier reading overall if these footnotes were instead made into sidebar-like pages that didn't interrupt the flow of the story, but I've come across worse problems to have with a book. I found the time=travel / possible alternate universe plot really interesting, the environments well described. I maybe wasn't always 100% on board with the Cheri / Peter romance (or attempt at romance, to me it kinda felt like it barely got off the ground by the end of the novel) but that wasn't really a deal breaker for me. They were still interesting as individual characters. And Tesla as an almost-bad guy! :-) Hoping Mr. Flaming has more stories in the works!
The interesting bit was the stories of Edison and Tesla rivalry. The rest was so-so.
