About book The Jesuit Guide To (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality For Real Life (2010)

I have a developed a thing for the Jesuits. Last year I read a year devotion set out by the Irish Jesuits titled Sacred Space and loved it.Okay did not exactly finish this one.Read the first 75 pages or so.Skipped according to topic thereafter.Getting on a bit of a theological overload at the moment, so called it quits and returned it to the library. This would be a good book for someone who believes, or wants to explore the merits of spirituality and practicality. In other words, what you believe in your head about how God and His Son and how it should look dribbling out steadily in the sometimes gritty, but more often than not every day boring day to day life. I really liked his chapter on the phrase "spiritual not religious". I have lately found myself making such claims myself. James Martin, gave a really insightful look as to why "religious" is part of your life as a follower of God. He showed how that in Ignatius's day (the founder of the Jesuits Order) there was skepticism and almost a disdain for "spirituality". And that in modern times just the opposite is true: being "spiritual" is very socially acceptable; almost hip in some circles. But religion is a the current social sneer. He gave a really good, concise argument why, in our pursuit of God and truth in our lives, mankind needs both. To me that was the best thing I got out of this book. One of the best books on spirituality I've ever read. Actually, it is a handbook, as Ignatians are "contemplatives in action". :-) Fr. Martin as an excellent teacher and writer, mixing scripture, Ignatian teachings, relatable stories of people living day to day from all walks of life and faiths, and a lot of humor. I can not recommend this book more highly to people of any spiritual level, or faith, or not. Nourishment for your soul, that will likely benefit those around you too...
