The Iron Witch is a nice, easy read. Capping out at about 289 pages, it's not one of the excessively long tomes that are becoming more commonplace, and is a book that can be finished in a night or on a weekend between classes without much difficulty.I was pleasantly surprised by the main character's "powers" and how they came to be. With the popularity of supernatural teen dramas, I was worried that this would be much in the same vein, but the element of alchemy was a great deviation from vampires, werewolves, and ghouls - even if the title is a bit misleading into having you think this would be a bit more witchy in nature. So, check for an interesting seeming plot.However, I'm not the most excited about our heroine, Donna. The struggle on whether or not to confide in another adult is real, as it would be for any teenager. The thing is, is that earlier on, it's presented as though Donna simply doesn't want to get into trouble, and she still struggles with this decision with each passing dark fey. Much later, we find out that her Aunt is not a doting Guardian, but more or less a place-holder for an insane mother. We realize that there are really no adults that Donna would trust at this point in her life with this sort of information, and I think that's a bit more important as far as motivation not to tell is concerned. Especially considering she only feels guilty, not suspicious to begin with. For a good portion of the book, it seemed almost as if she was at war with herself. The Battle of the Instincts - Attraction to Xan VS Major Life Crisis: WHICH WILL WIN? In the "final battle" I was truly surprised that things worked out as well as they did. It was as if this bumbling girl had gotten her One True Slayer moment, but almost a little too well for the set-up it received.And I guess that's the thing: I'm still searching for those fantastic relatable female protagonists, and while Donna was good, she fell a bit short. There are more books to this series, and it is my hope that it does get better, that our characters grow and we learn more about each of them. Though, to be honest, if there wasn't a cliffhanger at the end of this book, I probably would not continue - if I do at all. Das Cover ist wirklich wunderhübsch und ein Eyecatcher, was aber vor allem an den silbernen Applikationen des Tattoos liegt. Die Charaktere fand ich leider etwas schwach. Donna, die überall als Freak gilt, hat geheimnisvolle Tattoos. Und auch sonst umgibt sie sich gerne mit Geheimnissen. Ihr Mut stach jedoch hervor. Navin ist ihr bester Freund und versucht zumindest sie in allem zu unterstützen. Xan ist ein Halbelf ohne Flügel, der alles nicht gerade einfacher macht. Vor allem ihre Tante Paige scheint Donnas Leben so kompliziert wie möglich machen zu wollen. Der Schreibstil ist vor allem eins - geheimnisvoll. Das Werk erfahren wir die meiste Zeit "über" Donnas Sicht, in ihre wirklich Perspektive rutschen wir erst durch die Tagebucheinträge, die man immer wieder findet. Karen Mahoney schreibt klar und deutlich, so dass man die Handlungen eigentlich leicht nachvollziehen kann. Die Story war irgendwie nicht so ganz das, was ich erwartet hatte. Donna ist gebrandmarkt dank ihrer silbernen Tattoos die sich seit dem Unfall auf ihren Unterarmen schlängeln. Um sie zu verbergen trägt sie seidene Handschuhe. Doch leider halten die nur die neugierigen Blicke ab, nicht jedoch das Unheil. Denn kaum hat sie sich versehen steckt sie auch schon mitten drin im Schlamassel und muss irgendwie versuchen die Welt und vor allem ihre Liebste vor den bösen Dunkelelfen zu beschützen.Ich würde dieses Buch allumfassend gerne wie folgt beschreiben: Ganz nett. Ich habe mir mehrmals notiert, dass Iron Witch sehr geheimnisvoll ist und Leser in vielen Dingen einfach im Dunkeln tappt. Zum Beispiel was es mit den Tattoos auf sich hat. Leider waren mit die Charaktere, wie Oben schon einmal genannt, etwas zu schwach. Ihre Persönlichkeit kommt kaum heraus, vor allem die Nebencharaktere sind wirklich nur eine Nebensache, was ich etwas schade fand. Es war alles schon ganz nett und hat das Werk hat mich auch unterhalten, aber irgendwie hat etwas gefehlt. Ich kann euch nicht einmal genau sagen, was mir so gefehlt hat, aber irgendwie war es noch nicht vollständig.Auch die Spannung ist nicht permanent vorhanden, sondern tritt erst gegen Ende wirklich auf. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt plätscherte der Roman eher vor sich hin, ohne das wirklich etwas Markantes passiert wäre. Und auch die Fragen, die den Leser permanent durch den Roman begleitet haben, werden erst relativ spät und dann auch nur sehr spärlich aufgeklärt.Das Ende an sich ist relativ abgeschlossen, zumindest sind alle Handlungen beendet. Aber dennoch fragt sich der Leser wie es weiter geht.Fazit:Alles in allem fand ich "Iron Witch" leider etwas schwach. Die Charaktere waren mir zu unpräsent, die Spannung war mir zu niedrig. Dennoch hat mich das Buch unterhalten. Es hat einfach etwas gefehlt, zumindest in meinen Augen. Vielleicht steigert sich das Ganze ja im zweiten Band.
