Όσοι είστε τακτικοί αναγνώστες, θα γνωρίζετε πολύ καλά την άποψή μου σχετικά με την L.J. Smith και το "Vampire Diaries", το λογοτεχνικό εκείνο έργο της που ίσως της χάρισε και την μεγαλύτερη μερίδα αναγνωρισιμότητας στο σύνολο της καριέρας της. Και μπορεί το τελευταίο βιβλίο της προαναφερόμενης σειράς να μην ήταν αυτό που θα περίμενα και να μην μου έδωσε όλα όσα θα ήθελα ωστόσο, με αποζημίωσε η νέα κυκλοφορία του Ψυχογιού δια χειρός Smith, το πρώτο μέρος της εξίσου επιτυχημένης της σειράς φαντασίας, "Ο Μυστικός Κύκλος". Και επειδή πάντα έχουμε ένα θέμα με την Smith και τα βιβλία της, θα ήθελα να αναφέρω στο σημείο αυτό πως τα τρία βιβλία που αποτελούν τη σειρά, κυκλοφόρησαν το 1992 αλλά, επειδή ως γνωστόν η Smith ήταν κατά παραγγελία συγγραφέας του εκδοτικού που έχει και τα δικαιώματά τους, δεν υπογράφει τη νέα τριλογία της σειράς η οποία ξεκίνησε με το πρώτο της βιβλίο μόλις φέτος. Ξέρω, σας κάνει εντύπωση, όμως αυτή είναι η κατάσταση.Η ιστορία λοιπόν μας μεταφέρει στο Νιου Σάλεμ, μια επαρχιακή περιοχή της Αγγλίας όπου η Κάσι δεν είχε ποτέ της σκοπό να βρεθεί ωστόσο, δεν θα μπορούσε να αποφύγει. Η γιαγιά της είναι άρρωστη και το γεγονός ότι βρίσκεται στην Αγγλία με τη μητέρα της για καλοκαιρινές διακοπές, οδηγεί στην απόφαση να πάνε να μείνουνε μαζί της για να την βοηθήσουν αλλά και για να γεφυρωθεί το χάσμα στη σχέση των δύο μεγαλύτερων γυναικών. Παρά την πρόθεσή της να εγκλιματιστεί στη νέα της ζωή, η Κάσι αντιμετωπίζει πολλά προβλήματα, από την πρώτη της κι όλας μέρα στο σχολείο. Μια ομάδα παιδιών, οι οποίοι φαίνεται να ανήκουν σε μια ομάδα με την ονομασία Κύκλος, την βάζουν στο στόχαστρο κάτι που κάνει τις προσπάθειές της για ένταξη ακόμα πιο δύσκολες καθώς όλοι σταδιακά την αποφεύγουν. Μοναδική της παρηγοριά σε όλα αυτά που συμβαίνουν γύρω της είναι η θύμηση ενός μυστηριώδους αγοριού ου γνώρισε στις διακοπές και με το οποίο είναι ερωτευμένη ακόμα κι αν δεν γνωρίζει το όνομά του.Φυσικά το βιβλίο δεν αναλώνεται στα πάθη της Κάσι ως μάρτυρας στα χέρια των εχθρών της. Η προσωπική της λύτρωση έρχεται όταν γνωρίζει την Νταϊάνα, η οποία αμέσως την περιβάλλει με αγάπη και λίγο αργότερα με έκπληξη ανακαλύπτει πως είναι κι εκείνη με τη σειρά της μέλος του Κύκλου και πιο συγκεκριμένα, προσωρινή του αρχηγός και ότι η ίδια είναι κατά το ήμισυ μία από αυτούς. Και εδώ ακριβώς βρίσκεται το μεγάλο πλεονέκτημα του βιβλίου. Στο Κύκλο και τη σύνθεσή του. Ο Κύκλος αποτελείται από δώδεκα πρόσωπα, εφτά κορίτσια και έξι αγόρια, ο καθένας εκπρόσωπος και μιας οικογένειας των μαγισσών που έφυγαν από το Σάλεμ λίγο μετά την ταραγμένη περίοδο που πέρασε η περιοχή, για να προστατέψουν τόσο τις οικογένειές και τους εαυτούς τους, όσο και την ξεχωριστή κληρονομιά τους που τους χάρισε γνώση και δύναμη πέρα από τα όρια του λογικού και του δυνατού. Και μπορεί με το πέρασμα του χρόνου οι απόγονοί τους να αποφάσισαν να αφήσουν πίσω τους το παρελθόν όμως η νέα, η τελευταία γενιά, έχει ορκιστεί να μην αφήσει τη δύναμη αυτή να χαθεί και φαίνεται πρόθυμη να κάνει τα πάντα γι' αυτό.Παρά το γεγονός ότι στην θεωρία τα πρόσωπα είναι πάρα πολλά για να τα διαχειριστεί κανείς σωστά, η Smith το πετυχαίνει αυτό και με το παραπάνω και μάλιστα, όταν θα κλείσουμε το βιβλίο, θυμόμαστε τα πάτα γύρω από αυτούς και ίσως να μας εκπλήξει το γεγονός ότι δεν ξεχνάμε κανέναν. Υπάρχουν εκπρόσωποι τόσο της σκοτεινής όσο και της φωτεινής μαγείας αλλά σε όποιο στρατόπεδο κι αν ανήκουν, ο καθένας έχει την δικιά του, ξεχωριστή προσωπικότητα και μια μοναδική δύναμη την οποία δεν έχει άλλος. Έτσι, παρά τα όποια κίνητρα μπορεί να υπάρχουν πίσω από τις πράξεις τους, μεταξύ τους υπάρχει μια ισορροπία, ο ένας χαρακτήρας συμπληρώνει τον άλλον και όλοι μαζί συμπληρώνουν τον Κύκλο για τον οποίο έχουμε μια σαφή και ξεκάθαρη εικόνα, παρά που δεν γνωρίζουμε τα πάντα γι' αυτόν. Αντιλαμβανόμαστε την έννοια της ενότητας και πόσο σημαντική είναι αυτή εκεί που ένα ρήγμα μπορεί να κάνει τα πάντα να καταρρεύσουν. Όπου υπάρχει το καλό, παράλληλα ζει και το κακό και το τι θα επιλέξεις να ακολουθήσεις είναι που θα καθορίσει όλη σου την πορεία αλλά και την ύπαρξή σου. Είναι μια ομάδα και σημασία δεν έχει τι θα κάνει ο ένας αλλά, τι θα ακολουθήσουν όλοι.Μπορεί η Κάσι να είναι θεωρητικά η πρωταγωνίστρια της ιστορίας παρ' όλα ταύτα, δεν επισκιάζει τους υπόλοιπους χαρακτήρες οι οποίοι, ο καθένας με τον δικό του τρόπο, είναι σημαντικοί στις εξελίξεις της ιστορίας, η προσωπικότητά τους αντανακλά κάτι πολύ συγκεκριμένο και πραγματικά μας ενδιαφέρει να τους γνωρίσουμε και να ανακαλύψουμε περισσότερα γύρω από τους ίδιους ατομικά και την ιστορία τους συνολικά. Η Smith αφηγείται την ιστορία της με μοντέρνο, γρήγορο τρόπο, αποφεύγοντας πομπώδες στοιχεία εντυπωσιασμού και με αυτή την εισαγωγή της ιστορίας της έχει σκοπό να μας συστήσει τον μαγικό της κόσμο, έτσι ώστε να είμαστε προετοιμασμένοι γι' αυτά που θα ακολουθήσουν. Η έννοια της φιλίας και της αφοσίωσης δοκιμάζονται, μπροστά στο προσωπικό θέλω και συναίσθημα, το πεπρωμένο καλεί χωρίς να μπορεί κανείς να το αποφύγει και το θέμα είναι το τι θα επιλέξουν οι ήρωές μας να κάνουν από δω και στο εξής. Αν θα ακολουθήσουν τα θέλω ή τα πρέπει, αν θα ενταχθούν με το ως ή το σκότος, αν θα επιλέξουν να πληγώσουν όσους αγαπούν με την προδοσία ή με την προσπάθεια τους να τους προστατεύσουν.
My opinion on this book is biased. Very, very biased. Disgustingly so, I'm afraid.First I'll give a very short review on the book then I'll move on to the show.This book is so flawed but it's impossible for me to give it less than 4 stars.The Book“Will you swear to be loyal to the circle? Will you protect and defend those who do, even if it costs you your life?” -pg. 185Cassie Blake and her mother have moved to New Salem to live with Grandma Howard. She's not too excited about leaving her friends and California behind. And she certainly doesn't want to attend a new school full of people she doesn't know. But she has to. On her first day she gets on Faye Chamberlain's bad side. And that is one thing you don't want to do. Then Diana Downey comes to the rescue. She takes her under her wing and introduces her to people in the Club. Nobody's ever been this nice to Cassie. Now, if only Cassie wasn't in love with Diana's boyfriend...This book isn't any good. It's full of cardboard characters, stereotypes, and love at first sight. BUT I LOVE IT!Cassie is annoying with her lusting after Adam after seeing him ONCE and she's selfish. Faye is a bitch, Deborah is mean as hell, Suzan is...just there I guess, Diana is the “Purity Princess”, Adam is so 2-dimensional it hurts, the Henderson twins are neither here nor there, and talking to Nick is like talking to a brick wall.Their parents are never around. Every single character is extremely attractive (except Grandma Howard), and they're all hooking up with each other. Even though they're kinda related.Cassie is threatened and bullied and when she speaks to an adult about it, she gets blown off.She opens her locker to find anything from a doll hanging from its neck to rotting hamburger meat and when she goes to the principal (with proof!) he tells her to solve her own problems. I believe he uses those exact words.Usually, all those things would make me throw this book down in frustration, but I didn't. I read it in less than a day and I will read it again one day. Because I really do like it. It was nothing new and it didn't exactly shock me or anything, but LJ Smith is to me what a V.C. Andrews book was to those who grew up in the 80s. A guilty pleasure.It calls to me, lures me into a van with candy, then takes me on a very short ride around the block, then drops me back off again like nothing ever happened.And I willingly get in the van every.single.time.No regrets!Quotes:”The silver cord can never be broken. Unfortunately, this book contains witches, betrayal, and it was made into a short-lived tv show. I watched it religiously. Damn you, CW for canceling this show after it's first season even though it was nominated for (and in my opinion, won) New Fall Show You're Excited For, Best New Series, Best Sci-Fi or Fantasy, Favorite New TV Drama, Best-Youth Oriented Television Series, and Best Main Title Theme Music.And now that I remember, the soundtrack was simply perfect. It couldn't have been better I found new songs I had never heard of before and LOVED. Damn you, CW *shakes fist at sky*The show was freakin' sweet! It contained plot twists that made me scream, magic, and all of that aggravating teenage angst and lust I claim to hate but secretly like. It was epic.And the actors and actresses were very attractive. In fact, the lady who played Diana (who by the way also stars in the very popular show Teen Wolf) was Miss Louisiana Teen USA in 2004 and Miss Teen USA. And her acting wasn't too bad. I wasn't too keen on Thomas Dekker playing the main character Adam on account of me not finding him too attractive at first, but he grew on me, dammit. Then close to the end they brought along Grey Damon and I was like “daaaaaamn, where has this little white boy been all my life?!” Even Cassie's dead-beat dad, Joe Lando, was mighty fine!And I've always been secretly jealous of Britt Robertson... so very pretty, so very small and prettyI don't understand how Vampire Diaries is still being filmed and Secret Circle isn't. They're both by L.J. Smith and they're both Paranormal Romance.Is the fascination with vampires that real?The CW really dropped the ball on this one. But what's done is done.Overall, I would recommend reading this book if you, like me, love witches and drama or if you though the show was the best thing since sliced bread. By the way, it's on Netflix so if you're even a tiny bit curious go check it out!

the InitiationtThe Initiation is about a girl named Cassie Blake, who goes from California to a town called New Salem with her mother to help her grandmother. There she meets a boy named Adam who she falls for, and a group of people, which just so happens that everyone is afraid of. Cassie now finds dark secrets about this group of teenagers and this town. This Secret Circle may help Cassie find what been missing her whole life or it may just as well kill her.tOne thing that this book reminds me of a show called 6teen because there was this one episode where Jonsey, Jude, Wyatt, and Jen had to pick either Nikki or Caitlin, but they wind up making up and everything goes back to normal at Jude’s pet fish’s funeral. Cassie had they same kind of situation except she had to choose one of them and she picks Diana (a girl from the club) and Adam agrees with her because he was one of people she had to pick. She and Adam swear that they would never hurt Diana (emotionally).tI give this part of the book 5 stars because it is so intense in a certain part of the book (which I cannot reveal unless you read the book). I recommend this to anyone who read The Vampire Diaries or just books about magic because this book has nothing to do with vampires.

The Secret Circle has been buried among my books for a very long time, and for some reason I never took the time to look for it but after seeing the TV show I finally decided to bring it back to the surface. For the most part, it wasn’t worth the simple effort of picking it back up, I think the title “The Initiation” says it all, it really is just an introduction to the story and the characters, so there’s not much to expect from this first book. I’m glad the producers of the show didn’t follow the storyline and made some changes, otherwise it would be plain boring. On the other hand, I think it would be interesting to see the Henderson brothers included in the circle (and not just six), since they are originally twelve, but I get it’s too many people to keep track of. By the way, did they really have to kill Nick? I still don’t understand that turn of events; I can only hope it will be for the better good. Back to the book, it’s a light and entertaining read, despite its obvious flaws and I still don’t get that instant love thing with Cassie and Adam but, what the hell, it’s a story about witches, so I guess the weirdness is part of being a witch. Faye’s character was the only one who caught my attention and kept my interest in the story, the others were just too stale or poorly developed, I don’t know. I might follow the next books, not much for the cheesy romance, but to witness more of that Faye’s wickedness. I wouldn’t recommend it as a complement to the series.

As the first book of a trilogy, The Initiation spends a lot of time building up details, but it also managed to make me interested enough to get through at least the next book. On its own, however, it's really rather dull and unexciting, kind of like Cassie, its protagonist. This isn't really her fault, though, as it seems to practically be a requirement for all teenage heroines in books for young adults (particularly those aimed at female readers) to be as bland as plain oatmeal, I guess so tha
