About book The Hockey Sweater And Other Stories (1979)
I often times find it difficult to really rave about a set of short stories. It's not that I don't respect the writers or the medium, I just have little tolerance for the "Aha!" moment which most short stories seem to strive for. Within the last lines of nearly every short story these days, there is the tangible effort by the author to say, "See? See how clever I am? The pencil sharpener isn't a pencil sharpener, it's the little girl's need for a father! Praise be unto me for this unexpected ending!" Most times, I feel as though if I were to meet the authors of these short stories, they would have their hands out for the laurels I surely owe them.Roch Carrier seems to take an entirely different approach. He tells the story as it should be told: nothing more, nothing less. These are vivid recollections which develop meaning more as a running narrative than as individual pieces. I knew nothing of rural Canada, yet I walked away feeling as though I could explain it to the next person I meet in the street. This collection, in my opinion, delivers upon the promise of what short stories can do.
