Definitely a helpful book in terms of explaining why babies behave the way they do with regard to sleep. I found the writing a bit repetitive, but I did try some of the suggestions with my own baby and they have been helpful with regard to helping calm him so that he will sleep. We've gone from having no real routine(and lots of unhappy crying by baby) to getting onto a relatively normal sleep pattern. My sweet little guy is 2 months old but usually only wakes up to eat once at night now. Obviously, I haven't gotten to the point of using some of the techniques suggested for older children but I am definitely going to give them a try. Read it through once and am rereading. Can I say how frustrating it is to try to read baby sleep books? They all contradict each other. Well, this one for one advises, for my 4 month old terrible sleeper:Get outdoors in the a.m. - long walk in bright sunlightwhite noise - rough, rumbly, as loud as a shower, all night long (until first birthday)swaddling (until they're rolling over)swings and slings during the day... ok to nap in a swingno coffee/chocolate for momroutine, schedulesleep cues: dim lights, white noise, tv off, lavender, massage, reading, pacifier, lovey after 6 moput down eyes open "wake to sleep"put to bed earlier (or later)be consistentcluster feed and dream feedshush and rock back to sleep instead of nursing himIf all this doesn't work, then choosea)Ferberizing, expect it to take 4 nights or so: check in and comfort vocally from door after 3 min, then 5, then 10, then every 15. Use at night for every night waking. [Question - if he can't make it more than 4-6 hours without food - how do I still be consistent? Maybe I wake him after 4 hours to eat - and for the teething, give tylenol?)b)Pick up/ put down - put down every time he's calm, then pick up again when he cries, and comfort with as little rocking/talking etc as possible. I feel like I'm doing most of this already... the shush and rock instead of nursing is a BATTLE every time I try it, so I'd be left with the last two choices.
