A fascinating observation of three irredeemable characters. Life has thrown each one of them under a truck and left them with only the bare traces of humanity. It's hard to empathize with them, but Thompson works hard to find some connection, even if only through a desire for money. But ultimately we are left aghast at just how manipulative and cold-hearted people can be. The book grabs your attention like a bloody bar brawl. En grifter är en svindlare av något slag. Roman noir, eller pulp crime fiction kallas genren i litterära sammanhang.Jim Thompson är en författare som har fått ett uppsving efter sin död. När han levde ansågs hans böcker vara (bättre) kiosklitteratur. Nu har kritikerna svängt och flera av hans böcker har även filmatiserats, bland annat den i alla fall sevärda The Killer Inside Me med Casey Affleck och Jessica Alba.
Well plotted, consistent, and evocative of a certain time and place. I especially liked the ending.
