If you like to read adventure books than this is the book for you!The genre of this book is realistic fiction/adventure.If your really like to read about books then you will like this book, this is an exciting book to read. The setting in The Great Wide Sea is in the Bahamas and Bermuda. This book is about a 15 year old boy and his two brothers. Ben and his brothers Dylan and Gerry were living in a house by the sea. Until they heard bad news their mother got into a accident and died, after that there father was so sad that he decided to sell the house for a boat. They were not happy with his father, his father wanted to travel for a year but Ben and his brothers didn't were mad. Two days later his father bought books on how to sail that he got from home before he sold it. It was past a week his father was being bossy and telling them what to do so his son Ben got mad and they stated fighting, Ben got out of the boat and swam to a nearby island by the time it was midnight he was hungry that he swam back to the boat. There he stayed and kept sailing. Ben and his crew saw another island where the stopped the boat and went to the island. They went to the island for food and supplies because they were already running out.It has been over two weeks that they had stayed on the island so they went back to the boat and Ben started fighting with hid dad again, The next thing you knew he was gone and they knew a storm was coming They didn't know what to do! So they started helping each other with the work they have been learning. Ben and his brothers survived after the storm had stopped they headed home with the use of their help. When they got home their dad found him and stayed with them. The conflict is person vs. nature because they had to survive the storm. The characters actions were not believable when Ben started yelling at his dad and hitting him. I find that rude because usually we don't yell at our parents or hit them because we are supposed to respect them. I also found it shocking because you didn't know that he will start hitting his father. I also didn't like the way his father started handling the situation because the father started hitting Ben instead of sitting down with him. This is why I thought the characters actions were not believable. Why did his father leave right after they were fighting? I didn't know why he did leave them alone when the father knew that the storm was coming. If i were the author i would of waited till the storm came and knocked the father out of the boat. I would of found it more interesting. It would also have more adventure and you will love the book even more. I would rate the Great Wide Sea 4 out of 5 stars because I didn't like some of the parts but on the other hand some of the parts were good.I would recommend this book to whoever likes books about boats or adventure. If you really like this book you should read it. I think you will enjoy it. Another thing is that we could all relate to Ben and his father. This is why you should read this book. I think this book had a lot of different ways to keep the reader interested. For example, when Ben and his dad are arguing. This happens many times throughout the book and is one of the main conflicts of the story. It helps show how Ben is feeling about ditching everything he knew and starting over. This book also could have used better word use. There were many places throughout the book that the author could have used more sophisticated or more complex word usage than what they did.
