About book The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club (2012)
I loved this book. It drew me in from the very beginning when you learn someone has hired a hit an to dispose of a resident of Gordonston, a neighborhood in Savanna, Georgia. Soon secrets kept by the various residents are revealed, one by one, until the surprise ending. I can see how this dark comedic novel won the Reader's Choice Award for 2813. It was quirky as well as suspenseful. I can definitely recommend this book and am eager to read more by this author. Being a true son of the South and a frequent visitor to Savannah, I can say that Mr. Whitehead captures the warp and weave of a culture determined to cling to a bygone culture with the same tenacity that Spanish Moss clings to the city's ancient live oaks. The Gordonston Ladies who are the pivotal characters could easily have been one of my aunts. Whitehead's descriptions of them are so dead-on accurate that you find yourself cringing at times - at least I did. It is not surprising that the ladies are right in the center of all the little mysteries that are spinning out of control. The story drips with dark humor tastier than a mint julep. Sit back with your favorite adult beverage and enjoy.
