About book The Geek's Guide To Dating (2013)

This was a very adorable, funny and applicable primer for those of us who have more experience in relationships with fictional characters than people IRL. Most of the pieces of advice are more common sense than anything else; the bulk of this book boils down to "Hey, don't be an inconsiderate jackass." The references are great and include most every niche of the nerd pantheon. Quick and easy (a lot like your Mom), my one complaint is this is predicated on the idea that someone can easily get over their almost crippling shyness and paralyzing fear of rejection. There needed to be more morale boosting content and tools to keep people from associating any rejection related to dating to all those times in middle/high school where other girls called you fat or other guys called you a homo for loving Magic: the Gathering. Still, if your personal history contains a deep, passionate love for Mr. Spock or Kara Thrace and not an actual human person, you might wanna consider picking this up. I am definitely a bit of a geek, but admittedly I am not as big a geek as I thought, because there are certain aspects of The Geek's Guide to Dating that went way over my head....like in the clouds with Lakitu dropping Spinies over my head. This is definitely a book with a niche audience and author, Eric Smith, knows his audience and plays to their inner nerd in need of lovin'. Now, I will say, this book is definitely more suited to a geek guy looking to date a nongeek girl, BUT there are sections that geek girls can reference, as well as, simply fitting certain elements/suggestions to their situation. From the Introduction, Welcome Player One all the way through the dating cycle to the Boss Level, Advanced Geek Dating we are taken through some of the Do's and Don'ts of finding that special someone, asking them out, getting ready for that special date and even dealing with the aftermath of that first date. Do you have enough in common with the one you are interested in to even make it worth backing out of your Thursday night D&D game to take her out? What about your car? Bet you never even thought that you may need to get your car date ready, well, Eric helps guide you through "pimping your ride" so you won't end up a lonely "wounded dwarf with the mystical strength of a doily" (Yes! I get to use a Buffy quote!)A definite fun read for all geeks, especially those ninth level sorcerer's searching for a someone to share their emerald chalice.
