About book The Game From Where I Stand: A Ballplayer's Inside View (2010)

This book is a little different from most other baseball books. It's not just a collection of baseball hijinx, or the story of a season or of a career. Well, it's kind of the story of Glanville's career, but it's more of a philosophical approach to the game as it is played today. Yes, there are anecdotes, but that's not the focus. It's more introspective.Glanville dedicates a chapter to each phase of the game from the player's perspective, for example, Before the First Game (chapter 1), Respecting the Game (chapter 4), and post-retirement (chapter 11). Intelligently written and insightful. Maybe a little low key. Recommended for anyone who likes the game of professional baseball or just pro sports in general. I enjoyed this book's peek into the private lives of baseball players, especially Glanville's perspective on the off-season and life after the game. But the book's structure was weak, failing to develop into a full-fledged narrative that would've kept my attention. Instead, it felt as though the time line was shuffled. Now he's with the Phillies, now he's in Texas, now he's back in Philly, now he's in Chicago. While baseball fans may find more here to love, I can't recommend this book for a non-baseball reader such as myself.
