i would give this book a 5 but the last 100 pages or so kinda had me not bumbed but annoyed how max is treated and how david is acting and all the hiding stuff from the main character it kinda makes me not want to read the next book also since it's so obvious he's being used by everyone and it's so very annoying to me it's like he's the only one not in on any/everything and the fact he's just letting people tell him what to do if it wasn't for the ending tho this would be my favorite book in the series so far :) i'm still wondering about a feel things like will max ever master the old magic inside him and when he does will he be capable of using stronger better actual magic or will he be stronger faster and all that good stuff.. but a very good book but again it would deserve a 5 but the ending i can't bring myself to do it :/ I realize this was intended for a younger audience, but I still think that the author skipped several important events and I would have liked for them to actually be developed more. Even though the combat in this book is fast paced and described well, it is often inconsistent. What I mean by this is that the main character will often fight hordes of enemies with ease, then fall in much simpler fights. Other than that, my only other fault with this book is the fact that the main character's anger problems often get him into trouble, which is not very believable and overused since it happens quite often in the series.Saying this, I enjoyed the book and its characters quite a bit. I probably have picked out details that a younger audience would not notice, but I felt like I should point them out. Overall, a great book and series, with a nice story line and some cool bad guys.
