About book The Ex-Wives (2013)

I just loved this book! It was an easy read but with a compelling storyline that made it unputdownable. Celeste seemed a bit wierd meeting up with all Buffy's ex wives but it made sense in the end. He was a completely likeable character , not that I'd want to sleep with him as his various medical complaints, squalor and size made him unattractive in many ways which was refreshing as a hero. The ex wives were different but not too badly stereotypical which could have been tempting. I loved her writing and there were sentences that I wanted to read again and again to enjoy them fully. I can't wait to read Heartbreak Hotel now and meet Deborah in person at the Horizons Bookshop event on Friday at the Grovefield Hotel.

Fun if contrived story. Some great character observation such as the dreadful Jacquetta. And interesting how things have changed just in the 20 years since this book was written. Celeste has a phone card in her bag - remember them? But I felt frustrated that, having worked my way through endless meetings between Celeste and various ex-wives and their kids, the final 'reveal' (slight spoiler alert) was done "off-stage." Moggach skipped over the meeting between Celeste and L; cowardly, writers should have the courage to step up and describe the big moment.

Do You like book The Ex-Wives (2013)?

An entertaining and, at times amusing, read as aged actor Buffy tries to cope with life as a lonely man in his 60's and examines where he went wrong in his various marriages. Then his mood is lifted when he meets and falls for a young woman called Celeste who works in his local pharmacy. As he becomes infatuated with her, she seems intent on delving into his past and contrives to meet his ex-wives whilst at the same time resisting his advances. Great read, continued in her latest book, Heartbreak Hotel.
