I read this after hearing about it on npr probably. Also in preparation for a trip to the Grand Canyon this year. At first I wasn't thrilled about all the history of the river...but it really added to the intensity with which I read the rest of the story of how they planned and executed their speedy river trip. I look forward to our trip and seeing the places I read about in the book and watching the dories go down the river. Beautifully written and meticulously researched. I admire the author's craft; but for me, there was so much detail, it took me too long to get through it. There was lot of setting up with all the background information about the individuals involved, the engineering of the Glen Canyon dam, etc., before the actual run through the Grand Canyon. Still, I never felt that it was padding or fluff, all of it was pertinent to the subject.
