About book The Eldritch Conspiracy (2013)

My rating = 3.5 starsThis book gets mixed reviews from me.THE GOOD STUFF: The best part of the book was that the story was very fast paced. There was always something happening. I loved that Adriana and Celia bonded as real cousins and friends. I enjoyed the wedding festivities in both locations and even enjoyed the numerous crisis surrounding each wedding.THE NOT SO GOOD STUFF: What the ?? Did the authors forget what happened in the first 4 books with Creede and Bruno? Did they forget all the things that Bruno did that are unforgivable? And even if Bruno is forgiven, there is still the matter of serious issues they face - family (everyone except Matty hates Celia, especially Brunos' Mom), family (Bruno wants children, Celia does not), family (Bruno rarely puts Celia first, he always puts work, family, school, career before Celia). The attraction might be out of this world, but a long term relationship, this isn't. NOW, FOR THE REALLY BAD STUFF: What happened to Creede? The authors gave him a totally new personality. I mean this guy isn't the same guy that was in the previous 4 books. I understand an author has a vision of who she wants her characters to end up with. I may not agree with that that vision because she/he/they have written certain characters so well that I have been rooting for someone other than who they envision as "the one". I really do get that. What I don't get is ignoring the person who was in the first 4 books and making it seem like he is a totally different person with different morals. There were so many ways Creede could have been written out, but this did such a disservice to his character and the authors respectability. Heck, he could have died and I would have been happier. Another minor complaint is that I didn't feel the authors really tied the book to the title until the last few pages and even then, the relevance wasn't clear. This section definitely could have been expanded on to tie the story to the title (or just come up with a different title, maybe something so simple as The Wedding Conspiracy).Yes, I spent more time on this review being critical, but this was just such a disappointment in a series that I really enjoy. I hope the authors get back their mojo so we can find out what Gran doesn't know about Celia and her mom, so we can rid of Bruno and find someone new for Celia, find out if Dawna ever gets married and find out which of the sirens are going to get pregnant. All in all, it was a quick but frustrating book.I'd give this book 3.5 stars. This book was part of series which I did not realize when I picked it up. In my defense there is nothing on the book that would inform the reader of that fact--the book is pretty much stand-alone. So maybe, just maybe I'd have liked the book more if I'd read the previous ones, but my guess is that I would have never made it past the first volume. Here's the problem, the author insists on inserting every possible type of supernatural being in the narrative usually at a moment where it would most help the plot. It feels a lot like cheating. Overall the writing is mundane, but it was strong enough for me to finish the book so it ends up 2 not 1 star.
