About book The Drops Of God 1 (2011)

I was very surprised by this manga. I stumbled across the title while looking for something else and thought I'd give it a try. The Drops of God is the most mature (not in regards to sex or violence but in concept) manga I've ever read. As someone who is discovering my own tastes in wine, I found Shizuku's journey through this first volume relatable (to an extent). I'm learning so much while reading (even though I cannot pronounce any of the French). For anyone interested in a tale with wine as its focus, give this one a taste. World renowned wine critic Yutaka Kanzaki’s last will and testament states that his collection of finest and rarest wines should go to the person who is able to identify all twelve wines he named “Twelve Apostles” and that one rare wine “Drops of God”. In the race to find these rare wines are Kanzaki’s only son Shizuku and his recently adopted son, the wine critic – Issei Tomine.Shizuku and his father did not have the warmest of the father-son relationships and neither does he show any inclination towards wines or this much lauded collection. However, when presented with the prospect of losing his legacy and his house over the wine selection, he realizes that he has been trained to do this his entire life. A training that his father began when he was no more than a little kid is going to help him match steps with the wine critic. The story builds up on the race to identify the chosen wines between the wine expert and the novice. To Shizuku, it also becomes a way of understanding his deceased father, more so through the memories these wines seem to awaken in him.It is a very addictive sort of a plot with learnt skills and expertise pitted against natural instinct. Never fails to arouse interest, that one! In the illustrated panels of the book is the much spoken about crash course on wines. Like Shizuku, novice reader is taught to understand the nature of wines, differentiate them and also appreciate them. The Drops of God is a great addition to my slowly growing manga collection. I possess only two volumes so far and the story is building up well. I just might give in and splurge on the next volume. If you are not a manga reader then may be it’s time you give this a try. It is a ongoing series so you might like to know how it unfolds.
