Written in an amateurish style, with underdeveloped characters and plot, this seemed like a book I would dislike because of the lack of polish. And yet it has a down-to-earth charm that drew me in and helped me to enjoy the story despite its flaws. The main character seems to be an incredibly naive and almost-gullible young man (for his age), making this part biography, part allegory. The fact that it reads as a multigenre book is one of its flaws, but also lends charm to the tale. I'm going to confess sin and say I ordered this book from Kindle because I thought it was going to have a lot of sex scenes in it. It doesn't. What shocked me most is that this is I have totally enjoyed the book. It sort of hints at a similar story to Huck Finn, but instead of going down the Mississippi on a raft, a young man is sent on a kind of treasure hunt to try to save his family from ruin. But the pretext for this journey is like all Odyssey stories: the kid loses what little money he has and ends up riding the rails as a hobo. This was the depression era. The kid's father was a fundamentalist narrow minded Baptist preacher, who so reminded me of my own, fundamentalist Church of Christ father. The kids has a crisis of faith [welcome to my world]. He meets characters on the road that give him other ways to think about the complex topic of Faith, and Doubt. There is also a sexual awakening that close to 100% of all humans go through. This is a delightful book. I had such low expectations that it sat on my Kindle for a long time, but recently I was stuck in a doctor's waiting room with none of the books on my READ THIS RIGHT AWAY list, so, just to kill time I started THE DIRTY PARTS OF THE BIBLE, and I just love this book. By the way, the dirty parts of the Bible was when the kid discovered the Song of Solomon which actually contains references to breasts. It is all pretty innocent, but this book made me vibrate like the soundbox of a Stradivarius. If you want a fun, coming of age, book then give this one a try. It really should have a wide audience, and the writer should be very proud of what he had done here.
