This is an interesting dual time narrative story which flits forwards and backwards in time between the 1670s and the court of King Charles II, and Trinity College Cambridge in 2008 as history professor, Claire Donovan attempts to solve the puzzle of the Devlin Diary.This historical mystery is well written and atmospheric ,it kept my attention from the beginning. I especially enjoyed those sections of the book which cover life at the Restoration court, and of Hannah Devlin's resolve to be a physician like her father. I really liked this book and give it 4 1/2 stars**. There are two story lines. One takes place in the 1600s with an intriguing murder mystery and a love story between a woman, who is struggling with gaining acceptance as a physician (female doctors were not acknowledged in that era), and a "gentleman" of the Royal Court who is also a physician. In solving the murders of several prominent people serving the King they uncover a secret political alliance between France and England. The second story focuses on a current-day American History graduate who finds a diary in the Trinity College library. This leads to a murder mystery when one of the professors at the college is found dead.It is well written with surprises at the end when the murderers, both at the college and in the 1600s are revealed.
