About book The Dead Mountaineer's Inn: One More Last Rite For The Detective Genre (2015)

Kohe alguses tabab mind meeletu soov minna Otepääle suusamata, eemale kõigest, mis kaasneb linnaliku olemisega. Minna sinna, kus on vaid lumeväljad, puumajakesed, üksindus ja sume talveõhtu... Oo, talv, tule ometi kiiremini.Ma vajutasin koni neitsilikult puhtas tuhatoosis puruks ja läksin magamistuppa ümber riietuma.Esmamulje raamatu esimeste lehekülgede põhjal on suurepärane. Täpselt minu maitsele! Vaid paaris kohas saab vinguda, kuid üldpilt on väga hea. Soovitan.

Was this an enjoyable read, definitely. Was it perfect, no. I really wanted to love this book. The idea of two sci fi authors writing outside their genre really intrigued me. From the start I really enjoyed reading this book, however, I found the ending to be a real low point for me. After reading the tiny "newspaper report" at the beginning of the novel I knew I was in for an extraterrestrial spin to the book, but I didn't think it would be the main way the end the story. Solid book, but just n

Do You like book The Dead Mountaineer's Inn: One More Last Rite For The Detective Genre (2015)?

I am not familiar with these authors, and to me this was a truly original book. I recently read And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and I found the first portion of the Strugatsky's book very in keeping with that traditional whodunnit style. I will admit to getting tripped up at times by the names (I really had trouble remembering who Hinkus was when we first hear about him up on the roof), but that's true with any large cast of characters. At first I felt disappointed by the sci-fi twis

After Roadside Picnic, this is my next favourite book by the Strugatsky brothers - the masters of Soviet science fiction. As far as I can say, this is one of the few, if not the only book that successfully mixes multiple genres to conjure a powerful story. With the help of the writers' brilliant way of storytelling, this makes "Dead Mountaineer's Hotel" one of the best books I have ever read!Starting as a simple nonfiction novel, it quickly transforms into a detective mystery and finally shows itself to be a true science fiction novel in the style of the Strugatsky's.Again, a very powerful plot twist near the end.And after what happened, inspector Glebsky will never be the same again...

The experience of reading this book is kind of like discovering a lost episode of Twin Peaks (complete with a mysterious one armed man and boatloads of hilarious weirdness). I think it helped that I read a few reviews and knew what I was getting into -- that way the ridiculously bizarre twists ended up being delightful as opposed to frustrating. It may start out like an Agatha Christie novel, but it certainly doesn't end like one. That said, this book is sure to be a blast for all you fans of 70's era Soviet detective comedy science fiction!
