About book The Cross In The Closet (2012)

Tim's experience of coming out as gay and living for a year as a professed gay man to experience the judgement and segregation of his family in friends in the Christian community and better understand how that judgement and segregation effects those in the gay community was quite a read. As a person that's always been able to put myself in someone else's head space I found myself empathizing both with the struggle Tim went through as his family and friends judged and shunned him and with the gay people he came to know as good friends. All members of the religious right could do with reading this book to better understand how their view of "the least of us" is destructive and hurtful in today's society. It takes a lot of balls for a fundamentalist to come out as gay to see what gay people really go through. His story is intriguing and compelling, and I have much love for what he did. However, there are times when I think he tries too hard with his metaphors and tries to make his thoughts "flowery" when they really don't need to be. And he does sometimes repeat thoughts. But there's a profound sense of compassion that jumps out, and it is, at times, really emotional.

The idea was incredible. The writing was often just serviceable. But, I'm very glad I read it.
