About book The Creation Of Anne Boleyn - In Search Of The Tudors' Most Notorious Queen (2014)

Incredibly entertaining first half which is pretty eye opening about where versions of Tudor history have come from. The second half is less compelling, but still interesting. Analysis of a couple of Anne related media and a nice bashing of the shit The Other Boleyn Girl.A brief, but really interesting bit at the end about how Anne is reflected in our ideals of the time. Quick dissection of a few element of our culture and bish bash bosh - Done! The core ideas pop up early and are repeated/supported often throughout the book. But they are good ideas and I like to hear them.Anyway - clearly Anne is ace. It was bound to happen: the first major Tudor history skeptic, particularly regarding Anne Boleyn. It's actually quite amazing to behold the size of the Tudor history industry these days, but like much of the general population, I simply can't get enough of it. It's refreshing to read a more cynical examination of Henry VIII's most famous wife, and her evolving presence in pop culture. However, what irritates me here is that, in spite of the author's demolishing of many past and contemporary peers, she doesn't necessarily prove any more convincing with her own theories and arguments. She seems just as open to deciding for herself what she wishes to rely on, in terms of sources, as other people. I suppose it's a touch of the pot-calling-the-kettle-black that leaves a slight, smokey aftertaste in reading this otherwise fantastic work. Warning: any David Starkey or Philipa Gregory fans should steel themselves before flipping through these pages...as no mercy will be shown.
