المهتدية .. طفلة يهودية أمريكية من نيويوركإسمها مارغريت ماركوس كرهت الطفلة ثقافة الغرب وأخلاقياته منذ صغرها، فبحثت عن جذور أخرى لتتعلق بها، فلم تقتنع بديانة والديها اليهودية ، ولا بديانة البلد الذي تنتسب له المسيحية أدخلت مارغريت مستشفى الطب النفسي في نيويورك لأنها بلغت التاسعة عشر من عمرهاوهي عذراء ! و عانت من اضطرابات عقلية وعدم قدرة على التعايش الاجتماعي مماجعل طريقة الاسلام ونظامه جاذبا لها فوجدت ضالتها في الإسلام ،فغيرت إسمهاإلى مريم جميلة ..و لم تكتفِ الطفلة مارغريت باعتناقها الإسلام ولا بتغيير إسمها،ولا بمهاجمتها للغرب بلانتقلت للعيش في الباكستان وهاجرت الغربوكل حضارته وغادرت بلادها وحيدة متوجهةإلى ذلك المكان المقفر من الحضارةوالصحة والرفاهية ! فتعيش في منزل مولانا( المودودي ) الذي قرر أن يتبناها ، رعاها واحتضنها .أحد مشايخ الإسكندرية قال عن أبو الأعلى المودودي بأنه " أتقى شخص في باكستان !"تقول المؤلفة .."بالرغم من أني دعوت هذا الكتاب قصة ، إلاأنه عمل واقعي وليس من نسج الخيال "وتقول أيضا : " أعكف منذ سنين على كتابةهذه القصة، وكأنها قصتي أنا، لكني الآنفقط أدركت بأن قصة تحول مارجريت ماركوس إلى مريم جميلة لم تكن سوى نصف الحقيقةالتي يمكن إخبارها، بل النصف الأسهل "باختصار ، الكتاب يضيف معلومات جديده و جدير للقراءة .. This was a hard read for me as a convert of Islam myself. Of course, going through this process myself I noticed the parts where she started to change into an Anti-West figure. The people she loved at home were not supportive at all, and so she moved to Pakistan. When she got there, she devoted her life to Islam. The people in Pakistan encouraged her change to be what they wanted, and there she was an unknowing victim of her own wishes and desires being played by everybody around her. I do wonder how much the author added in as Deborah Baker has admitted to adding parts of the story to make it roll better on paper. When the author was finished writing this book, she sent one to the (real life) main character, and I can not help but wonder how she felt seeing her story on paper.
