I don't know how this book slipped past me when it first came out, considering I love all of Mrs. Van Liere's books some how I missed reading this one. Its now apart of my collection. In a time where Christmas is such a commercialized affair. This story reminds you just why we celebrate, the birth of our Lord. In todays times where there are all these comfort measures for pregnancy & birth, sweet Mary had none of that, and baby Jesus although a King had none of the luxuries that's babies today have. This is a MUST read!! Donna VanLiere always give us something for Christmas that is fantastic. The Christmas Journey is the retelling of the Nativity Story but with a much more realistic presentation. As she says, "No glamorized, sanitized, commercialized version". From cow patties to scratchy, smelly hay to an anxious, unprepared husband, accompanied by wonderful illustrations, this story tells of the birth of the Christ child with truth and reality. It is a very short read (about 30 mins), and I think would be a wonderful family book to read aloud every single Christmas.

ok. Supposed to be an updated telling of the birth of Jesus but it fails to draw you in.

A great short story. I different view on the Christmas story than what we are taught.
