About book The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master The Art And Science Of Personal Magnetism (2012)
Very interesting study of charisma. This book is hampered by the fact that it is pretty exclusively written to be used by CEO's of corporations. Gross. All of the examples are like "here is how to look impressive while giving a presentation to your stockholders." Also it is weird, most of the exercises are from Buddhism. Mindfulness meditation, practicing gratitude etc. As well as an exercise in giving your worries over to a higher power, which I think is lifted straight from Alcoholics Anonymous. It's a real hodge-podge, nothing wrong with that, but it feels disorganized. This book basically says try these practices, not for their originally intended spiritual reasons, but because they will make you more likable. Which feels pretty weird, right. Still it's fascinating information. I'd recommend this book to anyone who feels like they are shy and would like to learn how to be more out going. I found the book interesting and Cabane's writing style is clear and concise. Most of her tips seemed of the "necessary but not sufficient" sufficient if you'd like to develop charisma. Cabane will get you from zero charisma to someone people enjoy being around but I don't see her types as enough to become a Steve jobs or Bill Clinton, even with time and practice. That said I enjoyed the book and the author, I just don't see it living up to its promise of helping the reader "master" the art and science of personal magnetism.
