About book The Cazuela That The Farm Maiden Stirred (2011)

I loved this book! How clever to give us the english words first, then replace them with the spanish words in the next usage!Loved the arc of the story and how it tied into "The House that Jack Built" kind of style. The illustrations are colorful and very fun.I could see this book working very well in a classroom where there are spanish speakers, or where they're learning spanish! And a recipe at the end?A great book!Check this one out! Main Characters: The Farm Animals, The Farm MaidenSettings: A farm that was located in MexicoP.O.V: Third PersonSummary: This is a bilingual book that is so adorable. The Farm Maiden and the farm animals work together to make the rice pudding. Cazuela is a mexican dish that has rice and milk in it along with other ingredients to make it extra special (arroz con leche). The farm animals and the maiden start dancing and singing while adding each ingredient. They use spanish and english words to describe what they are adding to the pot. They get so into their dancing and singing in their little “fiesta” that the pot starts to boil over. They have to work together to stir it and fix it so that they can enjoy their delicious meal!Lexile: 1.0Classroom uses/Themes: This book is written in both English and Spanish and would be a great book for kindergarten or 1st grade with students that are English language learners (ELL). There are so many words that link to English and that are fun to play with while reading the book. I would create a word wall with both Spanish and English words so that students would be able to see the relationships. I would also have students begin to understand the beginning, middle, and end of a story and draw pictures to illustrate those stages in the book. The themes range from community, sharing, working together, and cooking.
